The Sixth Ring .:. a NaNo Novel .:. jls [27 Feb 2027|02:44pm]
[ mood | creative ]

This journal is for chronicling a third attempt at NaNoWriMo for 2006. Since I have delusions of grandeur and hope one day to publish some of my writings, this journal is friends only. But I'm a pretty nice person and I'm sure I'll need all the help I can get, so comment here if you'd like to beta-read and I'll add you. Thanks for stopping by!

Here we go... [03 Nov 2006|10:08am]
Yes! It's November! Yes, I am writing a NaNo Novel this year (for the third time)! Yes, I am slow at updating!

Let's see. The story this year is called The Sixth Ring. In the world, the ringing of bells signifies news, and a courier follows the bells with more specific information. In one particular village, the bells have not rung sext in anyone's lifetime, and lifetimes are quite long.

Here's the list of the bells' meanings...

1 ring: Dawn/Dusk
2 rings: Call to Meeting
3 rings: Event/Celebration
4 rings: Birth/Marriage
5 rings: Death/Ending

6 rings: catastrophe.

I'm sort of hoping to write it using the bells as an outline, though that only works if the sixth ring ends the book, so maybe I will have two parts. Dunno. I really need to figure out more of a plot, because things aren't moving very fast right now. I managed to make count on the first day, but yesterday I only wrote about 500 words because I was at work and then class and didn't make it home until 10 pm. Sigh. I used to like Thursdays. Hopefully massive amounts of work will be done this weekend...including starting on my biochem paper, which is due December 1, and looks like it will have to be really good to help me over the current test's slump...

Wish me luck, and bonne chance to you.

It's done! I finished a story! Oh, it's still got plot holes. But dammit, I did it, and I even managed to leave room for a sequel.

I am inordinately proud of myself right now. But I can't glory in the feeling of finishing...it's off to bed, so I can try to cram two weeks of studying muscles into one day. Whee.

*contemplates having a second year of NaNo under her belt* Good night!

...oh, sorry, did I give away the end of the novel? Come on. If you know me at all you know I'm a sucker for happy endings...

Anyway, you're looking at another NaNoWriMo 2005 winner. Two years in a row, baby! Say hello to Artist of Heaven. 50723 words and counting. I'm almost done with it, and I'd like to think I'd finish it tonight. Done just a few hours earlier than last year ;) I'm happy with this one, it's got some gaping plot holes and some inconsistent characters, but it all worked together quite nicely.

NaNoWriMo Winner 2005!

Now all I have to do is study the massive amounts of muscles in the human body for the quiz tomorrow...

[ music | Josh Groban: Canto alla Vita (f. the Corrs) ]

49336. 98%. 600-800 words to win, probably about 1k or more to finish the thing. Wow.

I'm proud of myself and I haven't even made it yet. Perhaps it's a case of celebrating too early, but I think I can make it ;) Congrats to all of you that have, and those of you who were brave enough to even start.

45k [28 Nov 2005|12:27am]
Alrighty then. I just made 45,000 at midnight, even with a tornado warning, and an ignored leak at 11:49 pm. I'm actually 200 words over my desired word count for the day. I think this is the first time in the two years that I've been doing this that I managed to actually make the required wordcount (aside from the obvious November 30th deadline, of course...)

We'll see how the last 5k goes. I would sure hate to not make it with so little left, but I have to study A&P for the lecture quiz tomorrow (drat, later this evening, as it *is* Monday already) and lab quiz on Thursday (when we get to dissect more cat, joy of all joys). Wish me luck, and congrats to all of you who are much faster than I.

getting there [25 Nov 2005|12:13am]
[ music | Ben Jelen: Give It All Away ]

I just wanted to let you all know that I've finally reached the 75% mark. I'm projected to finish in 9 days, and there are only 6 days left...we'll see how much I get done this weekend. Hopefully I can continue today's 2.5k, but family is in town and I really should study the muscles and their insertions for my quiz next week...

Good luck to all of you. I know some of you are already done, and I salute you. Wanna tell me who you think the winner would be of a fight between the archangel Gabriel and the Devil? I have allowed myself the hope that I might actually be able to wrap this one up around 50k, but of course I have to get there first...

buenos suerte, bonne chance, nella bocca del lupo! Congrats if it applies.

Snowball in Hell [03 Nov 2005|10:59am]
that's sort of how I feel about my NaNo chances, since my muse hasn't showed up yet, but I thought I would improvise on the Snowflake method a little. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, that's fine...if you'd like to know more about said method, talk to me and I'll see about sending you the files. (Thanks go out to Mike from the STL Writer's Meetup.)

one-sentence summary of Artist of Heaven:
Gabriel is a lost angel.

Blurb:
The archangel Gabriel is missing from Heaven.
Oh, not really. That's just the premise of a book for which illustrator Gabriel Ashe is creating a cover. But the moment he sets pen to paper, strange things start happening, and the things he draws forshadow reality. Bizarre dreams haunt his nights. And his muse seems brighter than ever--but frighteningly so.

Suddenly priests are at his door and devils stalk his steps. Gabriel is about to find out if he can take up his namesake's mantle and enter the realm of the divine.

Huh. Sounds better that way. Sure hope I can make it work out that way...
Thoughts? Suggestions? Do you want to read it?

Don't you like my method of procrastination? I have to try to break 3k today. Then I'll almost be back on track. Sort of. Not really. I know my math is wrong. Leave me with my delusions.

This journal is for chronicling the events and sorrows of an attempt at NaNoWriMo 2004. As you can see, I finished, at approximately 10:30 pm on November 30, 2004. I did not put the entire novel up here for you to read, because I would one day like to see it published, so I'm reserving rights. If you would like to read it, please comment here and let me know, and we'll see about sending you a copy.

[ music | National Treasure Soundtrack ]

I'm so absurdly pleased with myself. But I'm so not done. Yes, I managed to make it to 50K, but the story is not done. It's nearly done, there's just the *ahem* big battle scene left, but you know what? That's ok. I can finish it after orgo is done. I will try to put up some chapters tomorrow, in between doing orgo homework, don't you know.

Squee!

Bah. [28 Nov 2004|12:32am]

[ music | Amethystium ]

One of these days I'm just going to have to get a throw away PC so I can use the stupid PC-only browser features, like LJ's rich text option. Since I'm too lazy (at the moment) to convert the whole 'Novare' file to HTML so I can post it from my Mac, y'all are going to just have to wait until Monday when I can do so. On the upside, I did manage to get past 40K, so the (very slim-to-none) chance exists that I might be able to finish on time. We'll see.

But since I'm nice, here's a preview of Chapter 14...yes, chapter 14. Journey of Discovery. (Hey, I'm not this clichéd normally but it was late and I needed a title. Besides, it's true.)
I've never ridden a horse before, but hey, I'm King Arthur. )

dreadfully sorry [10 Nov 2004|09:51am]
I keep meaning to post parts of my story, but Orgo is preventing me from getting very far. I'm onto the sixth or seventh chapter now, I *have* been writing, just not very much. I have only gotten to write a few hundred words each day the last few days because of studying taking up so much time. Hopefully it's worth it. Tonight after my test I hope I can post some...this seems to be a week for computer problems. For some reason posts aren't getting transferred to my website...they're in the database, just not showing up...sigh. I certainly didn't change anything, so I'm not quite sure why it's not working. And on the novel front, I hope the copy I saved to my harddrive survived, because the one I saved to disk is unopenable...again. I'm glad I have a backup. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I am writing it on a Mac and working on it at work on a PC, but it shouldn't have any problems with the conversion. the Excel file with my statistics works fine on both. And another 'snippets' file I have to remind me of things to write and notes on places opens...but this is the second time that the story file got corrupted on the disk. The first time was when I accidentally dropped the zip drive with the zip still in it, and it popped out...but still. This is not fair! I wanted to write this morning, to keep me away from studying just a bit. Bah. Here's to backups. Perhaps I should try to pick up a new zip. I'd tantalize you with some of the good stuff I've just written, but as you've read, I can't. Ugh. At least I've gotten into the 20% range...I hope that I can do much more this weekend! Good luck on yours!

needing more [07 Nov 2004|01:20am]
[ mood | exhausted ]

Hey all of you englishmen (or women, for that matter), I need your help. What easily taken in while slightly jet-lagged yet interesting things could one tour while on the way from the airport (I assume Heathrow, but correct me if I'm wrong) to King's College London? And while you're at it, what interesting things would *you* do if you were in London? Anyone who lives there, really. And how would I go about getting to Southampton? *winks at fellow NaNo dare-takers*

(reminds herself of the "touristy things in London" thread @ NaNo)

More NaNo goodies [05 Nov 2004|12:53pm]
Oh yes, I have discovered a college for my boy to go to. Oh yes, the irony is perfect. Oh yes, most of you probably knew this was coming long before I ever investigated it. Oh yes, Jonathan Arthur Barrett is going King's College in London. Ahhh.

The Evil Overlord List, even though I don't think I have one. At least, not yet.

World-Building exercises @ NaNo.

Dares @ NaNo. I'll have a list for you later.

Ergh. 5000+ words and I'm still behind. I hate you, Orgo!

bah [03 Nov 2004|01:19pm]
So, we have another four years of ineptness coming our way. How is it that half the country actually likes Bush? I don't understand it. Ah well. There's always Hilary in 2008. Sigh.

Yeah, so about the election night write-in :) I am now up to 3000+ words, which means I'm still a little behind where I want to be but hopefully will get more soon. In response to the person who actually commented...I hope I can post all of it but it might not go in order. And I'm still trying to decide where to put the end of chapter 1, so when I do finally get around to posting something story-related today, it might not be all of what I've written so far. We'll see! I hope you enjoyed the first part, it's pretty boring, I guess, but I made pages and that was all I was hoping for. Last night was really more about chatting with the NaNoers than writing...oh, and watching the sorry excuse for what we call the election process in this country. Sorry, I'm a little bitter. I really don't like Bush. And the half that didn't vote for him...he's got a large group of people out there who hate him right off the bat. Thank goodness Barack Obama won the senate seat in Illinois. Of course, he's going to be the minority's minority: the only African-American in the senate dominated by his opposing party. Seriously, my coworker is canadian and he wants to pack up and move back to Vancouver. I would join him, really. Ugh. Maybe by the end of four years Bush will finally realize that he really shouldn't make up words. Misunderestimate, indeed.

Sorry to bash your candidate if you're Republican. But he's severely limiting our freedoms and my ability to find a job working with stem cells. And he let the assault-weapons ban expire. Bah. I'll shut up now. It's too depressing.

writing is...going [02 Nov 2004|12:38pm]
I know I should stick some writing up here, and I will, shortly, I promise. I've got about 1500 words so far, as you can see from the lovely progress meter up there...I'm glad I found that. Hopefully I can keep up! Anyway, this is just a friendly neighborhood reminder to get out there and VOTE! Today is election day and it's going to be a close race for president, so please exercise your right to vote and do it! I'd prefer if you go for Kerry, because I'm a Democrat, but I will give props to you if you voted, regardless of party. Vote or Die!

I'm kind of disappointed because last night I was all in a writing groove, then my new roomie came home and wanted to talk about the state of roommate affairs and so I lost about an hour. Ah well. More today, I hope!
